If I want to pursue computational efficiency without using simulink for subsequent simulations, what simplifications can the MATLAB sample program make?

I don’t really understand what you aim for.
You can generate the solver to C and just use that if you want something fast.
I don’t recall the computational overhead of the MEX interface right now.
